Education and learning
Life never stands still, but we are not alone on that journey. Our talks and courses are open to all, and are designed to help you explore spiritual and ethical issues alongside fellow seekers and believers. We also offer a well-equipped resources room for people wanting to read or study further.
Cathedral talks
We organize regular talks and discussions for people who want to explore issues of faith in greater depth. These include sessions on the Bible, the bedrock of the Christian faith, and on contemporary ethical and social issues. Many feature outside speakers and some are run jointly with partners such as the University of Winchester.
When: Autumn, spring and summer programmes. Talks are normally in the evening and last about an hour, with extra time for questions
Attendance: Open to all. You are welcome to attend individual talks or join us for a whole programme
Price: Free, but donations to cover expenses and speaker fees welcome
Contact Canon Roland Riem for more information
Cathedral fellowship meetings
You are welcome to join us for these lunch-time meetings, whether or not you attend other Cathedral events and services. They offer a great chance to meet and chat informally. Held in our beautiful Prior’s Hall, they include a shared meal of sandwiches and fruit, followed by a talk of general interest.
When: Mondays (lunch at 12.30pm, talk at 1.00pm), monthly from Sep-Apr
Attendance: Open to all and especially useful to those looking to make new friends
Price: We ask you to contribute £3.00 to the cost of providing lunch
Contact Canon Roland Riem for more information
Quiet days
Our quiet days are not completely quiet! They’re designed to give you time to get away from it all and reflect with others so that you can continue to grow as a Christian, and pray and live with more confidence. There are times of silence but also a few optional meditations on a theme. You may also want to talk with your course leader who will be available for personal conversations during the day.
When: Three a year – one each term
Attendance: Open to all
Price: Usually £10.00-£15.00 to cover cost of drinks and room hire
Contact Canon Roland Riem for more information
Study days
We hold annual study days for people who want to grapple with a particular faith-related topic, such as taking an in-depth look at the 6th-century monastic Rule of St Benedict and what it has to say to us today. These days are focused on active learning and discussion rather than quiet prayer and meditation.
When: One a year, normally 10.00am-4.00pm
Attendance: Open to all. Some background knowledge or interest in the particular topic is useful
Price: Usually £10.00-£15.00 to cover cost of drinks and room hire

Other faith-related activities:
Action and Advisory Groups
Our volunteer Action and Advisory Groups give their skills and time to helping us with some key areas of our mission and ministry. Set up by the Dean and supported by members of Chapter, they offer both strategic and practical support with, for example, developing our worship, education and outreach activities and links with the Diocese.
Diocesan Resources Room
Open twice a week, the resources room holds a rich selection of faith-related books, artefacts, DVDs, posters and Godly Play sets that you can look at free of charge or borrow for a modest fee. It is particularly useful for churches, schools and individuals wishing to explore faith and the faith journey. You’ll find our service is informed, helpful and efficient.
When: Open Mon and Fri, 9.30am-1.15pm and 1.45–5.00pm.
Usage: You are welcome to consult any of our materials free of charge. An annual subscription with unlimited use of materials costs £10.00, or you can just pay a one-off borrowing fee of £2.00 an item
Where: The Sykes Room on the first floor of our Education Centre in the Cathedral’s inner close
