Since before Christmas, a metal spreader plate has been in place to cover loose stones at the entrance of Priors Gate. Permission from Historic England was required to lift and relay the stones, and while approval was granted before Christmas, the work could not take place during the busy Christmas Market period. With Pilgrims’ School on half-term and Fridays typically being quieter, this date has been chosen as the best opportunity to carry out the necessary repairs.
This is a temporary repair, as excavation is not currently permitted. However, research is ongoing to develop a long-term conservation and restoration plan for Priors Gate, a Grade I listed structure and Scheduled Ancient Monument.
This closure would affect anyone travelling via St Swithun Street to the cathedral. There are multiple entrances to the grounds of Winchester Cathedral including Great Minster Street, Loverose Way and Colebrook Street. Click here to access Google Maps so that you can plan your visit. Emergency service vehicles will be granted access during the Gate’s closure.
Winchester Cathedral appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this essential work is carried out.
If you are looking to visit the shops and businesses at Kingsgate, they can still be accessible from St Swithun Street by foot or if you are a travelling by car accessibility is via Canon Street from St Cross road.
