We are delighted to announce that the Bishop of Winchester has appointed Canon Andrew Micklefield as Winchester Cathedral’s Canon Treasurer, subject to safeguarding checks and formal references. Andrew has been serving in Alton as Vicar of the Parish of the Resurrection in the Diocese of Winchester since 2014, a role which now also includes responsibility for Bentworth, Lasham and Shalden.
Andrew will be installed as Residentiary Canon at Evensong, at 3.30pm on 5th April, by the Bishop of Southampton. He will join the Cathedral Chapter to take on responsibilities including overseeing the work of the Learning Team, enhancing the Cathedral’s role as Mother Church in the Diocese, and working with the Guild of Voluntary Guides, alongside the ministry of leading services and preaching, hospitality and welcome. Many aspects of this work have previously been undertaken by the Canon Chancellor, Canon Roland Riem, who will be acting as Interim Dean from 1st May upon Dean Catherine’s retirement.
Andrew is already an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral and therefore a member of the College of Canons. Until recently he was Chair of the House of Clergy in Winchester Diocese and is a member of the Diocesan Bishop’s Council and the Church of England’s General Synod.
Andrew is married to Fiona, who is headteacher at St Lawrence CE Primary School, and has a daughter, Emily, and a son, Daniel, and a dog called Ottie. He is a keen and able musician, playing both piano and organ.
Bishop Philip said, ‘Andrew has for many years been involved with the governance, ministry and leadership of the Diocese and is greatly respected and valued by those he serves. I am delighted that the next phase of his ministry will also be exercised amongst us all, and that his role includes strengthening still further the bonds between Cathedral and Diocese.’
Dean Catherine said, ‘I am glad that at a time of transition the ministry of the Cathedral is to be strengthened by Andrew’s tried and tested gifts as a parish priest. Andrew brings warmth and positivity to vital areas of our mission, with valuable expertise in education and social partnership. We look forward to welcoming him to Chapter, to worship, and to the work of the various teams whose work he will guide and share.’
