The Cathedrals Measure 2021 requires English Cathedrals to change their governance structures and apply to the Charity Commission for registration as charities.

Over recent months the Cathedral has been managing a strict process, drawing up new governing documents, going through consultation and applying for registration with the Charity Commission. We are pleased to advise that we have now reached Certificate 1 of this process and the Cathedral has now formally adopted the new Constitution and Statutes. These can be viewed here.

If all goes to plan, we expect to reach Certificate 2 of the process on 25 April and up to 10 days after that we will be registered and co-regulated by both the Church Commissioners and the Charity Commission.

With the implementation of these changes, there is opportunity for Winchester Cathedral to adopt best practice in charity governance, safeguarding and heritage stewardship while ensuring that it continues to flourish as a place of prayer, worship, thanksgiving and remembrance.

Our thanks to everyone who has been involved in the process to date, particularly Jean Ritchie, all members of the Cathedral Council, Canon Jane Hands, and Julian Hartwell.
