Cathedrals Measure - our Constitution and Statutes
The Cathedrals Measure 2021, came into law last year, following its passage through the General Synod of the Church of England and Parliament.
The Measure introduces significant reforms to the governance of all cathedrals, the key features being:
- A simplified governance structure.
- Registered charity status.
- Modernised constitutional arrangements.
To prepare for implementing the Measure, Winchester Cathedral Council has drafted a new Constitution and Statutes for the Cathedral with the help of the Dean and Chapter and expert ecclesiastical lawyers, using the templates provided and approved by the Church Commissioners. The acting Bishop of Winchester, the Church Commissioners and the Charity Commissioners have all seen and are content with the new draft Constitution and Statutes.
The Constitution will be the new governing document of the Cathedral, and the Statutes set out further detail on how the Cathedral is to operate. These are now offered for public consultation.
These documents are available to view in the Cathedral, at the Gift Shop and at the Cathedral Office, 9 The Close, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9LS and available for collection at the Visitor Welcome Desk in the Cathedral and at the Cathedral Office, No 9 The Close. Documents can also be made available on request by telephoning the Cathedral Office on 01962 857200.
