This week, The Winchester Beacon announced the Very Revd Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, as its new Patron. Dean Catherine will be taking over the role from Bishop Tim on his retirement early next year.
The appointment comes at the beginning of a new era for the long-established charity. Formerly known as Winchester Churches Nightshelter, the new name of The Winchester Beacon has recently been chosen to better reflect the charity’s vital work which has evolved to become far more than being just a safe place to stay for a night.
“I am really pleased and proud to be taking over as the Patron,” commented Dean Catherine. “There is a real heart to the work of the charity supporting those who have fallen on bad times, something which could happen to any of us. There has been a long and great relationship between the charity, the Cathedral and the local churches and I am really pleased that this is carrying on. I hope that we will continue to be a real beacon to many people in our city and particularly those who are in need.”
Michèle Price, Chief Executive of The Winchester Beacon said: “We are honoured to welcome Dean Catherine as Patron. We look forward to working together with the Dean to continue our essential work lighting a way out of homelessness.”
Aware that the pandemic has put a growing number of people at risk of homelessness, The Winchester Beacon has been working hard to increase capacity. The recent purchase of a four-bedroom property will enable the charity to accommodate 22 people across four sites.
The Winchester Beacon is appealing for help this Christmas. More information about ways to support people experiencing homelessness in Hampshire can be found at www.winchesterbeacon.org.uk.
