Guided tours have been a feature at Winchester Cathedral since WW2 but it wasn’t until 1974 that Winchester Cathedral Guild of Voluntary Guides was founded in order to improve and regulate the training of all guides. The guild of guides therefore celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year.

All guides are easily recognizable by their distinctive red collars. Guided tours take place throughout the day, but guides are also on hand to provide information to all visitors. Special tours, which give greater insights to aspects of the cathedral are also undertaken by the guides – these include stained glass, architecture, the Winchester diver and many more topics. Tours can also be offered in foreign languages for pre-booked groups.

Today we have 140 guides and recruit to train new guides every year. It is a vibrant and friendly community with the guild organising social visits, educational talks and training. Guides are important and appreciated within the cathedral volunteer community. It’s also a hugely rewarding thing to do.
