Established in 2012, the SMMI leverages and enhances the University of Southampton’s expertise which spans ocean science, engineering, maritime law, archaeology, and more.

Professor Damon Teagle, Director of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton, said:

We are truly delighted to be supporting the Whales art installation, and to be leading some of the associated events. Whales are the giants of our oceans that play extraordinary roles in shaping the world’s ecosystems and cultures, and even legal landscapes. Research at the University of Southampton continues to reveal fascinating insights into the significance of these majestic creatures, and we will explore some of these at our Ocean Giants event as part of Whales at Winchester Cathedral.

Ocean Giants is an evening of thought-provoking talks and performances that explore the diverse worlds created by whales. During your visit engage with an interactive exhibition stand highlighting the latest research and discoveries from the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, located within the awe-inspiring cathedral.

Clare Lean, Winchester Cathedral, Corporate Partnership Manager:

On meeting Professor Damon Teagle, we immediately recognized their potential to enhance this event. Through collaborative efforts, we have developed engaging opportunities for our audience to interact with their esteemed researchers and gain a deeper understanding of their groundbreaking work. They have worked diligently visiting the cathedral, gaining invaluable insights into how we work. We look forward to welcoming them along with their students to participate in Whales”.
