Despite the adverse weather, a record number of people were attracted inside Winchester Cathedral on Sunday to attend the first of three Market Carol Services. The Reverend Canon Dr Tess Kuin Lawton, Canon Missioner at Winchester Cathedral, reported the involvement of the whole Cathedral community in this service, with the lay clerks singing beautifully, Vice-Dean Canon Roly doing a star turn, the Custos’s daughter playing a role, along with babies, dogs, mac’n’cheese in the congregation, and a proposal at the high altar afterwards. Winchester Cathedral Christmas Services Attract Large Crowds
This is just one of many services the Cathedral hosts during the Advent and Christmas period. The Winchester Cathedral virger team calculate there’s an astonishing 100 services over the season, from the Advent Procession Service on 30 November to Christmas Day Festal Evensong, as well as the many school services.
Tess Kuin Lawton, Canon Missioner at Winchester Cathedral, said: “We are delighted by the strong turnout already at this year’s Christmas services. Winchester Cathedral and its grounds are welcoming spaces for everyone, and it is wonderful to see so many people gathering here. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, whose hard work ensures the Cathedral remains accessible and open to all during this busy and meaningful season.”
Vice-Dean Canon Roly also spoke about the Cathedral’s busy Christmas period on BBC Radio Solent on Monday 9th December. You can listen on the BBC Radio Solent website link, here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0k5kb03.
