Winchester Cathedral is preparing to host a grand celebration of the Coronation of King Charles III, featuring contemporary decorations in green and soft gold that reflect the King’s interests in conservation and the environment. The Cathedral, known for its historic royal ties, will be adorned with unique and symbolic floral arrangements, banners, and other special touches to mark this momentous occasion.
Patrick, the Head Gardener, and Judith, the Flower Arrangers Section Head, have meticulously planned the decorations, which will include a massive suspended Corona made of dried native species, willow fleur-de-lis, lavender bunches forming crosses, dried roses, herbs, and other local plants. Large flower arrangements will adorn the steps of the dais, and potted trees will replace the candle standards and be placed around the cathedral. Additionally, a new set of green and gold banners featuring images of the King, will be showcased, representing the King’s interests in the environment, young people, the Church, interfaith matters, architecture, family, and the military.
On Friday 5th May, a public Thanksgiving Service will begin at 7.00pm (early arrival is recommended). The service will feature massed children’s choirs composed of around 200 young people, The Spitfire Band, The Royal Corps of Drums, and other military musicians. The Cathedral clergy, civic, and military representatives, and representatives of the King’s charities and other faiths will also be in procession. The service will also include contemporary poems read by a Prince’s Trust graduate and biblical readings by one of the first ‘King’s Scouts’. The address will be given by the Very Rev’d John Hall KCVO CStJ FSA FRSA, former Dean of Westminster Abbey.
On Saturday 6th May, a screening of King Charles III Coronation will be available to watch from inside Winchester Cathedral. As well as the TV screens throughout the Nave of the cathedral, there will be a central large screen by the altar for all in attendance to watch this historic moment together. Words and music will be provided, allowing everyone to participate in this historic event as if they were there, creating a unique and immersive experience. Everyone is welcome, no booking required. Seats will be on a first-come-first-served basis. The screening will begin at 11.00am.
Please note that the cathedral will be open all day (no admission fees will be charged) and you are encouraged to come and take your seats early.
