Baptism
Some churches will use the word ‘baptism’ and some the word ‘christening’.
The moment when an infant or adult has water poured or wiped on their head is the actual baptism and is at the heart of the service.
People are baptized during a christening service just as couples are ‘married’ during a ‘wedding’ service.
Confirmation
Confirmation takes place after a person has explored their faith with others.
The Diocese of Winchester offer confirmation preparation where key aspects of the Christian faith can be explored, and details of the confirmation service and the statements and promises a person makes are discussed.

Weddings
Thinking about getting married? Congratulations!
Getting married in church is a sign to your friends, family and most importantly to each other that you are ready to make a public declaration of love and commitment in front of those who love you and are part of your life together, including God.
We are legally restricted about who we may marry here, and most must obtain a Special Marriage Licence to do so. To enquire whether you are eligible to apply for this, please contact us using the button below.
If you are not eligible to apply for a Special Marriage Licence, you may like to visit The Church of England’s website, where you can discover the name of your parish church and the contact details for your parish priest to enquire about your wedding.
Prayers of Love and Faith
The Cathedral has a particular calling to be here for everyone and our intention, without hesitation, is to offer an unreserved welcome to all. We will joyfully offer the prayers of blessing for couples who seek to mark, in the presence of God and family and friends, significant stages of life and love and we welcome the opportunity to do so.
Click on the link below to reach out to Canon Tess, who looks after the cathedral congregation and will be pleased to discuss this with you.
Funerals
Funerals are used to mark the end of a person’s life on earth, with family and friends coming together to express grief, give thanks for the life lived and to commend the person into God’s keeping.
Every funeral is different – some are small quiet ceremonies, whilst others are large occasions in a packed church.
Venues for receptions
Winchester Cathedral is not only beautiful, it’s extremely versatile, boasting everything from outdoor marquees to contemporary meeting spaces with all the latest facilities; the Cathedral is bursting with character and history, with a range of options for your upcoming reception or wake.
